  • Welcome & Coconut Introduction: Arrive at our traditional Balinese setting and enjoy a refreshing welcome drink, often fresh young coconut water. Meet your instructors, who will introduce you to the different types of coconuts and explain the traditional process.
  • Selecting & Preparing the Coconuts: Learn how to choose mature coconuts ideal for oil making. Then, get hands-on with husking (if applicable, or observing the technique) and cracking open the coconuts.
  • Grating the Coconut Flesh: Using a traditional Balinese coconut grater (or a more modern manual one), you’ll grate the fresh white coconut meat. This is a fun and surprisingly satisfying step!
  • Extracting the Coconut Milk (Santan): Mix the grated coconut with a little water and then squeeze out the rich, creamy coconut milk by hand or using a traditional press. This is the base for your oil.
  • Simmering & Separating the Oil (Traditional Method): The coconut milk is then gently heated/simmered in a wok over a controlled fire. Your instructors will guide you through this crucial stage, where patience is key. As it simmers, the water evaporates, and the oil begins to separate from the coconut solids (which become toasted coconut curds, often a delicious byproduct!).
  • Harvesting Your Pure Oil: Once the oil has clearly separated and the curds are golden, the pure virgin coconut oil is carefully skimmed or strained off. Marvel at the clear, fragrant “liquid gold” you’ve created.
  • Cooling & Bottling: Allow your freshly made oil to cool before bottling it into a small container to take home.
  • Discussion & Tasting: Learn about the many uses of coconut oil in Bali – for cooking, skin care, hair health, and traditional medicine. You might also get to taste the toasted coconut curds (blondo/galendo).

  • Create: A bottle of your own pure, cold-process (or traditionally heated) virgin Balinese coconut oil (approx. 100ml).
